183 Million Euros

February 3rd, 2006 11

Friday night is Euro Millions night, the huge lottery which is open to players all over Europe. This weeks jackpot is now up to a staggering 183 Million Euros. Take some time just to say that out loud, slowly… One hundred and eighty three million euros! Now that’s a LOT of money.

My question is this: Would it make you happy? For my part, I think the answer is a very resounding no. It’s not that I wouldn’t enjoy all the cool stuff that I could buy with the money, or even all the people I could help, it’s more that I wouldn’t trust myself not to let it go to my head. We’ve just been talking about this in the office, and the general consensus was that after a certain point the extra money is just meaningless. What difference does it make if you win a million or 183 million, it’s still going to change your life just as much.

What would you do with all that money? Is money an intrinsically evil thing, or is it just what people do with it? (ie, does money change you, or does money allow your natural tendencies to out?)

Over to you for this one… What do you think?

I am pretty confident that a few million squid would make me very very happy! Not simply just down to being rich, just knowing that I could do things that I know make me happy that I cant do now due to finacial reasons, such as travelling to exotic places and having people that disagree with me killed!

However I do agree that if I was to win as much as 183 Million, that I would give a huge amount if it away. All i’d desire is enough to have a few nice houses around the globe and a couple of nice cars. oh and a yacht, and a motorbike, maybe even a plane, oh and my own island. Or pehaps even world domination mwahahahha. and of of course a 200 foot tower made from Belgian chocolate!

I kind of agree with you on this Jon. While you can indulge in all those forbidden glorifications that money can’t buy, it all comes down to your happiness with yourself. I am reasonably happy now in my current situation. I have a pretty good job in something I enjoy doing on a better than average wage, a gorgeous wife I love dearly, my own house (well, shared) and a car. I have my health (as does my wife) so I should have a relatively long future to enjoy. I have enough of those luxuries to keep me going when I’m not working too (my computer with wireless, my SiPod, decks and most the food that I like whenever I want it - health permitting).

At the end of the day, I would be like your anonymous poster above. The majority of that money would probably be given away. I would help all my friends and family sort out any debt they may have, probably a little more so they can treat themselves to something too (Mum - you can have any house you want down in Devon!) then the rest would go to charities that I am passionate about. Those small or deprived countries who have nothing. I would fly over and just pay for stuff myself.

Still, it won’t stop me purchasing a couple of tickets tonight. You never know you’re luck - someones got to win!

Cheers Si. I don’t think I’ve spoken to anyone who’s not said they’d give a load of money away to charity if they won a big amount. If everyone thought this way about any money they received, then maybe everyone would be a bit better off… I’m not saying it would solve world debt or hunger or anything, but it may do some good. And some is better than none, right?

I know Lloydy does this, not that he makes a big thing of it… Nice one mate!

Me and my mate Bob were talking about this yesterday, if u happened to win the jackpot u would have the world media hounding your every move, and thousands of people trying in any way possible to take it off u, probably even people u call family/friends, but i would personally be more happy with a few mill, cus it dosent generate that much media interest, u can sort out your nearest and dearest and do those things youve always wanted to do. Hell i’ll be happy with me £3 back!

I’ve always thought I’d much rather be comfortable (leaning towards poorer rather than richer but not in debt) than rich, although I wouldn’t mind living a rich lifestyle as a treat every now and then… maybe just once! But the idea of living like that day in day out would soon lose it’s lustre and appeal. Yes you could help a load of people, but wouldn’t it be better to just not do the Lottery, because afterall think how unfair it is that all that money is just sitting there and going to one person, when there are so many people starving? I just think boycott all such stupid activities. In an ideal world we could share out the money and everybody in the world would be MORE than comfortable. Of course an ideal world only works in kid’s imagination’s and in dreams. It’s a pity, but there you go.

It’s amazing how many shockingly poor people I met in Africa who were actually MORE content and happy, healthier and suffering from no depression, stress or anxiety, compared to the well-to-do and middle class of Britain. It says a lot really. I know I shouldn’t generalise, but just for the sake of argument I will for once. I think the UK has go it all wrong, people live to work, they don’t work to live, and people’s sole aim in life is to make as much money as possible. And so they work ridiculously long hours, and then get ill because they’re not really LIVING and have to have time off work, which ultimately leads to unproductivity.

Meh, you got me on my soapbox. And I didn’t explain it very well, because I’m so damn tired. :) Good tired though.

I agree with starberri once in a while treat is good but not an everyday thing…. I’ve meet people who have nothing and they are happier then most…. I think if I had that sort of money id change and it wouldn’t be for the better that I know…. and I think that’s why God keeps me on a tight budget … until I learn to handle money…

Money is the root of all evil. That is plain fact in my opinion, and one I have found myself agreeing with more and more in the last couple of years.

Anything you hear on the news tonight that is bad news - I will guarentee you can trace it back money - and it’s good friend greed.

A prime example of this is Iraq - bollocks to the notion of freeing it’s people - it’s all about oil and the wealth that comes from that.

Look at these internet giants going over to China - Google being a prime example. It’s mantra of ‘Don’t be evil’ soon disappeared once it became tied to shareholders. Investing in a country with a poor human rights record, and little freedom of speech is pushed under the carpet, purely because it makes good business sense to invest in this growing market.

The environment is suffering as a direct result of big business and the quest for more and more money.

Now I seem to have found myself with more of the bloody stuff, and I can already feel it starting to effect the way I think. That’s why I’m trying my damnest to do the right thing, and invest it in my friends, good causes and perhaps one day to help fund ‘the big idea’ - combining the internet with helping make the world a better place.

Fine!

I shall be the one that takes the exceptionally shallow path, I obviously have no depth! :-)

I want all the money. Will I be happier? Nope, I am happy now, but I sure as heck will not be any sadder. I never understand why I seem to be the only one in a “large sums of money” discussion, that actually WANTS the whole amount.!

Yep, I want it all. I want to be pampered. Do I deserve it.? probably not. Do any of us deserve it? probably not.
The houses around the world, yachts, jet planes , even cosmetic surgery, I am up for it all.

And yes, I would give some away, feed the hungry, help the helpless. But thats hardly a grand gesture given the amount I would have in the bank.

No. I could not give it all away. I dont have it in me. Which actually makes me a little sad.

I also agree with what Si said, about being content with what you have. It’s being truly content with your blessings that brings happiness. Striving for more is only ever going to make you less content with your lot. And it seems to me, looking in through the (warped window) of the media into the lives of the richest, that they are not truly content. They have it worse than most in fact, because not only are they always striving to be richer, and more famous, they are striving for people to THINK that they are content, and that they are not striving. It’s a difficult charade to live.

When you read magazines designed for women these days (I’m sure those for men are similar, maybe with a different slant) you are bombarded with so many things you must have and must be to be happy, the things the rich and famous are heralded for having gotten down pat, or torn down in criticism when they haven’t: the hair, the makeup, the perfect figure, the nails, the clothes, the job, the boyfriend, the sex, the car, the parties, the healthiness, the money. NOBODY, save a perfect person (who does not exist) can ever hope to achieve this, but then comes the Lottery or Big Brother as a promise of something that will quickly fullfil this dream.

It makes you kind of realise how pointless the life we are conditioned to want truly is.

to be honest I think that people stress on money a lot, says its evil and say its bad. its not that it is, its the fact that the media really likes to run that story. there are many many millionaires out there that do many many nice things for people, they help the world so much, but we never hear about it. look at the Gates, finally we hear how much money they actually give, its the largest charity in the world, more then this jackpot even its up to like 4 billion US $….

so instead of saying money is no good, if you know yourself, you and know that you would do the world good with it, you might want to ask, will i get the recognition for it… :)

If you do it for the recognition is there a great deal of point?
