What Do You People Want From Me?

May 8th, 2006 8

I occasionally give my brain over to thinking about things. One of these things recently has been this very blog/diary/random crap generator which you (you lucky person) are currently reading. Besides pondering over the general design and, dare I say it, new features, I’ve been pondering the content.

Usually ideas for new posts come to me and I mental write them before I sit down at the keyboard. Then I’ll write a little of what I intended, and completely change it. Let me give you an example, are you sitting comfortably? Good, then I’ll begin.

The other week I watched a film called “Dead Man Walking“, which I thought was going to be a load of old crap but turned out to be one of the best films I’d seen in ages. It’s about a nun who befriends a murderer on death row. She shows him the kind of love and compassion you read about Jesus giving people, despite the fact that this guy is a rapist and murderer and everyone else sees him as nothing more than an animal. And it got me thinking what an awesome dude that Jesus guy was, that his message of love made him so dangerous that the authorities put him to death. All this in an age where things like stoning a woman to death for adultery was par-for-the-course. He really did give hope to the hopeless.

And then I think, nah, I couldn’t possibly write about that. I get half way through writing a post, and give up, or it gets stored in my ever growing unpublished folder. So I know I don’t need your permission to write about anything that inspires me, but what do you want? What are the things you’ve enjoyed reading (if anything) over the last few months? What are the things you’ve hated?

As per usual… Over to you.

As you know, I’m a big fan of your writting style and as such this blog. You also know that I can only take so many posts about the Big Man!

Having said that:

a.) I think you should write about what the hell you want (I really want to see the contents of that unpublished folder if today’s post is anyting to go by) and

b.) I would still like you to mix it up a bit.. for us non-believers it can get a bit much sometimes. But on that point I refer you back to point a.) :-)

Actually looking at your recent post you have indeed been mixing it up… Let me add a replacement request instead:

b.) More Posts!

I can completely relate with you on the “unpublished” folder (although mine are just working drafts at the top of my WordPress API). I often get a nice idea for a blog post but put it off until a time when it actually seems pointless.

As for what I want from you, I’m with Paul pretty much. I’m not a great believer in Him upstairs but respect other people’s wishes on the matter. It’s nice to think that people can be so positive towards their beliefs and gives life that little bit of edge that we need every now and then to keep going.

Just stick to what you’re good at Jon and keep writing comprehensive and interesting posts.

(One thing that does spring to mind before I hit submit is I wouldn’t mind seeing some blogs on your design process. You are naturally gifted designer, as evident in the Multipack designs, so seeing some of your thoughts on design in general or around the work you’re involved in would be a nice change.)

I personally would like to see more posts about polystyrene and its role in modern society.

Ah, I was wondering when someone was going to suggest this. I can’t help feel it was somewhat inevitable that it was Kris.

I relate with you with the draft posts.

Most often I will start with something I was inspired with, but, for me it gets longer and longer.

Thus, it becomes more complicated.

Then, I think, hey, THIS could be a book.

Then, this BOOK goes to the draft folder, where it stays and I write about something a wee bit simpler to explain.

But, the inspiration is half the thrill. eh?

Maybe I’ll write that book yet.

Just write about whatever you feel like. You draw an audience who obviously likes reading your stuff, so just keep at it. If your stuff is mostly one category and you’ve got a lotta visitors, I don’t suggest changing unless you don’t care about the people (though, obviously you do care, because you’re asking us).

Keep up the good writing.
