Bakewell Weekender

Happy Campers!

Has it really been over 12 months since I last went camping? But it was certainly worth the wait! Last week we’d had some of the hottest temperatures on record, and looking forward to a camp weekend was just the thing I needed to get me through the work week.

As the weekend approached, it got hotter and hotter and as temperatures soared to the mid 30s the good old bbc weather told me there was torrential rain forecast for Saturday in Derbyshire. Well, the weather didn’t disappoint! Amazing lightening and the welcome refreshment the rain brought just added to the fun of the weekend.

So as the rain set in we decided to visit some caves called the Devil’s Arse, so called because of the wet farting noises the river makes when it’s draining away post-flood. Unfortunately we didn’t get to hear the cave’s flatulence, but we did have a very interesting cave guide. She was magnificent to say the least!

Anyway, we got some cool photos, so if you’re interested have yourself a look.

Camping first became popular in the early 20th century and still remains popular today to those whom wish to escape the boundaries of modern civilization and flee to the country to relish in the great outdoors.

Apart from being at one with nature it can be argued that camping also allows us to bond significantly with our fellow campers while we undertake group and team working activities such as the erection of the tents and the collecting of fire wood.

Away from our modern technologies and amenities we are forced to once again recapture the beauty of conversation, as this often forms the main activity on most camping trips. These conversations allow us to perhaps gain a much deeper understanding of our fellow human beings, ranging from people we may have recently been introduced to and even those whom we may have known for many years.

Away from our computers and our television sets we can once again learn to appreciate the wonders of nature. As this point I would like to refer you to a small extract from a poem I wrote aged 10…

‘Up in the hills so they used to say Was a wonderful place where the children would play
The land was blue where the sweet waters pass And as green as an apple was the warm tender grass
The sheep on the hillside like flakes of snow Wondering about with no place to go
There is a small river that flows to the sea A great place to go, for you and for me’

Personally though, I f***in hate camping!!!!!!

You mean the poem? yes I did, I wrote it when I was in junior school (my mom has a copy pinned to the notice board still, I think). Although it was on the theme of pollution so i’m afraid things kinda go a bit down hill in the next 3 verses when someone comes along and builds a factory……
