Celebrity Obsession

October 17th, 2006 5

Is it just me or has the world gone just that little bit madder? The past two morning’s I’ve woken up to the usual radio wake-up call only to be greeted by stories of Madona adopting a baby. Fair enough, I guess this may be news worthy, but the “top story” for two days in a row? It just all seems a little excessive, when, as Neil in our office put it…

There’s some ******* in North Korea building Nuclar weapons

I guess it’s the westerns worlds obsession with celebrity, but where does this come from? People traditionally are famous for being good at something (or very bad), but where does the obsession with random people “off the telly” come from? Appreciation of a person is, it seems, no longer related to their net-worth to society.

What I am asking is this: Are we, as a society, dumbing down with our seemingly unending obsession with celebrity? Or is this just a phase we’re going through, a bit like flop-wallpaper or clogs?

I really don’t give a hoot about celebrities any more. I’m really annoyed about the sheer number of “celebrity” based TV programmes such as Celeb Big Brother, Strictly Come Dancing, Love Island, Cirque de Celebrite - what is the world coming to??

I can understand if you idolise someone for a great achievement - be a fan, there’s nothing wrong with that. But cashing in and basing entire TV channels on celebrities lifestyles just doesn’t seem like good entertainment to me. When E4 are basing entire TV series on Big Brother *losers*, you know there’s something wrong.

For me I knew the world had gone mad when that celebrity mansion reality show on Channel 5 contained a ‘celebrity’ contestant who was the financĂ© of a loser from Big Brother (all be it Jade Goody…. in fact another prime example in itself)

Another example is when the London Planetarium closed, to be reopened as a ‘Gallery of Stars’ - stars being Brad Pitt et al, not the cosmos.

Even politics is now a question of celebrity over substance. Will David Cameron win the next election because people believe in his policies? Maybe. I think it’s more likely to be the fact he’ll no doubt be a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing!

The world and society has indeed dumbed down, and it makes me very sad indeed.

Good point about the Planetarium, we went about 5 months ago, and it was the best bit of the Madame Tussauds visit. And now it’s going to be a gallery of “stars” ???
