Review - Little Chef Breakfast

October 23rd, 2006 16

The place? Little Chef, Oxford Peartree Services, A34, England. The breakfast? A sausage, a rasher of bacon, a hash brown, baked beans and scrambled “eggs”.

eggs? are you sure?

In an attempt to bring you wholy interesting and original content.. Here is a review of a breakfast I ate while visiting the very fine and historical town of Oxford. Traditionally the Little Chef was something that filled my heart with dread, the childhood memories of long car journeys and sweaty pancakes are still all to clear in my mind. It was then with a sense of trepidation that I boldly ordered a “early starter” (it was 12 noon) breakfast.

To be fair it was mainly yum, and the hash brown (an old Roobottom family favorite) went down a treat. It was only when I came to consume what I could only presume to be scrambled eggs that things started to look down. As you may be able to see from the photograph, the eggs were very skillfully avoided while the rest of the breakfast was polished off with aplomb.

So, there you have it, another exciting incite to the wonderful world of Roobottom. Comments on the subject of breakfasts in general are welcome, although specific comments about the Little Chef would be applauded.

I quite like little chef breakfasts and they do russle up some of the finest hash browns around. But for me the best breakfast has to be Morrisions Cafe simply down to the fantastic sauasages which in my opinion is the ingredient that can make or break a good breakfast.
Apparantly the Sauasages sold in the cafe are not available in the store (yes they are that nice that I asked). They probably get them from Sainsburys.

All i can say about the breakfast matter is errrr… The beans were clearly over done in the micro, the sausage and the quantity was woefully inadequate, the sausage had clearly just come from a kitchen waste bucket…Ah Jon you take your gal to the best places.xxx

You were in “Historical Oxford” and you went to the Little Chef for Breakfast?

I only visit that place when were in Coed y Brenin and it is the last resort! The woman in there is half dragon I swear it! I can just hear her squelching accent, as she bands about the kitchen banging pots and pans and having a go at the half dead staff.

Nightmare for me tonight then! Cheers Jon!

I don’t think I would be too happy shoving that scrambled egg down my gullet either. Looks like it’s come directly out of the chickens backside!

Right now I would love a Little Chef - Wendy’s, Quizno’s, In ‘n’ Out Burger, Applebys and all these damn Buritos and Mexican based fast food joints… it’s enough to make a grown man cry!

Kris - Of course the other good reason for preferring Morisson’s Cafe over a Little Chef, is that it’s about 50 yards from your house!

My experience with Oxford Peartree Little Chef is not dissimilar. I ordered a Big 7 burger. It was passable, but I wished I’d visited the Burger King that was only footsteps away.

Of course, had I wanted breakfast I would have been stuck with the Little Chef as the nearest Mcdonalds is a good ten minutes drive away. Too far!!

Nice review Mr Roobottom, I look forward to your wonderful food critiques in the future. In fact how about you do a review of the Zimbo special sandwich from a few weeks back!

little chef are a total rip off, on our trips to Peterlee the only thing available on the way are little chefs, three times we had undercooked bacon, so the last time we said can you cook the bacon a little more so we had one piece of bacon that was charcoaled and one that was undercooked, and they charged us nearly a tenner each for the privalidge!

Hmmm.. seems the hatred of the humble Little Chef runs pretty deep. Maybe someone should tell them they’re crap?

Hi, Jonny boy!

Beautiful site! I also, once had a crappy experience of little chef. Me and a mate of mine, Piers, went to Bridgenorth caravan site, just for a laugh, the little chef breckie however, wasn’t amusing!! Not only did it cost almost all the money we had (meaning that we had to rely on money that my friends Mom had dropped in the caravan for us to have a good time at the local fair later on) the grease theirin almost gave me a coronary!! It was Nas-t.

I’m glad someone else too can share with my heartache, thanks!

Yours truly (or however you spell it!)

Jon

Thanks for your comment Lee! I’ve been to Little Chef’s up and down the country, and there isn’t a thing you can say that would make me change my mind though. But thanks for having a stab at that in such an eloquent way!

I work at a Little chef.
Obviously as a stop gap part time job whilst i finish off college.

You think the foods bad? Try working there.

The manager just shrugs everything off.
Most of the staff here are 17 year old chav girls.
Im one of 4 lads that work here.
The staff are so rude, they walk around txting on their phones and one girl even answered her phone whilst serving someone! Obviously i gave her a much needed bollocking and sent her packing.

An yes as an underpaid “employee” i agree the prices are rubbish.
So i usually pile on a little extra.
Also a tip for anyone..dont eat the desserts, nothing worse than frozen apple pie.

Given the right staff and a total refurbish and possibly a new uniform! we’d be quite good but yeah..the most soul destroying job ive ever encountered.
