Is my iPhone wait nearly over?

July 10th, 2008 22

Let me tell you, I was bloomin excited on Monday to be able to order the new iPhone 3G. Especially as some of my mates had such a hard time getting on the O2 website let alone actually being able to order the thing.

It seems that O2 had expected maybe 100,000 hits total for the day. What they actually got was 250,000 by lunchtime. And while we’re on the subject, the O2 website is AWFUL!

So it’s now 34 minutes into July 11th, and I should be writing this confident in the knowledge that a friendly UPS guy will knock on my door in a few hours and proudly present me with my shiny new phone. But I’m not… Far from it. The fact I received a email from O2 today telling me they’d refund any postage I’d payed didn’t exactly fill me with confidence.

So we’ll see.. I’ll update this post thought the day. Boring as it may be, I’m excited about it. I’m also keen to see if Lloydy and Ellen manage to get themselves one from the store.

Update - July 11th @ 9:32am

Well, after speaking to a very nice Scottish woman, and despite ordering my iPhone at 8:03am on Monday - it looks as if I won’t be getting my new toy today. In fact, according to her (I think she took pity on me after hearing my disappointed “oh”) I’m looking at around another two weeks. Gutted. Hope you had better luck Lloydy.

Update - July 14th

I was in the Apple store in Birmingham yesterday and they had plenty of iPhones. It’s a bit annoying when I’ve ordered one like a week in advance, and now have to wait another two to get mine. I really don’t understand why Apple can’t help O2 fill some of their pre-existing orders rather than selling to new customers in store. I’m now toying with the idea of canceling my online order and trying my luck at the store.

Update - July 14th @ 12.40pm

Called O2 who say my iPhone will be delivered on Friday.. I’m not holding my breath!

Update - July 17th

Still no iPhone, but I did get my bill via email! Yeah! O2 so far are AWESOME!! no. really.

It’s 5:30am, and I’m up, having breakfast, and about to venture down to the Lichfield store of o2, although things already seem to be hotting up (http://summize.com/search?q=o2).

As for Ellen, she won’t be able to get to the shops until later this afternoon, so I think she is already starring disappointment in the face. I’ll let you know how it goes…

Am I the only one that thinks it doesn’t look as good as the original iPhone?

Sixth in line but, only 5 16Gb iPhones available at the Lichfield o2 store (of 19 phones available in total). However, I thought 8Gb was still worth getting given the 3 hour wait I endured, but upon upgrading my tariff to an iPhone only one, I couldn’t as my existing tariff is online only. Ordinarily you could call customer services, and then get the store to upgrade you, but as all there systems were down (only new customers could take away iPhones, and these weren’t activated) this wasn’t possible either.

A massive FAIL from o2. They knew they would have heavy demand today (and on the Monday) yet still there systems weren’t abel to cope. What with MobileMe down for the last 36 hours too, I’m not a very happy Apple customer at the moment either.

@Mark - yeah, I know what you mean.. It’s subtle, but I don’t think it’s as nice.

If it makes you feel any better, the yanks are having problems getting them activated too.

Got the last iphone from the o2 shop in Stafford. The o2 purchase system was down so they put all my details down on a paper form so they could enter them onto their system later.
After several hours of trying, just managed to activate the phone. One problem though - I’ve got no o2 service showing on the phone at the moment. - I don’t even know my new number!

I would like to say I feel sorry for you, but I dont. Standing in a queue at 5:30 in the fucking morning?? - Jesus H Christ!! (sorry Roo). Why did you not let all the other suckers go through the pain first, wait it out a bit and then get one when dust settles. Also this doesnt help http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/11/iphone_update/. We see this time and time again when big products are launched - 360 - PS3 - Vista -even the Sinclair C5 (ok that doesnt count). The thing is, I dont see why your both surprised when this launch involved the co-ordination efforts of 2 parties, one such as 02 - prffff - without factoring in the distributors etc.

Wait next time!

And Im sorry lloydy - but choosing the 8gb because thats all they had left, well that just desperate. Take it back and get your money.

You may think that Im not warmed to the new iPhone, but your wrong! I am planning on getting one, as soon as the waters have been thoroughly tested.

Rant over.

Finally activated and all working!
GPRS accuracy not good, shows my location 2 miles from where I actually live.
And, sadly no o2 3G coverage in Stafford.

5:30am??? Whats that then Ted?

I agree with Lewis, wait till the dust settles, all the inevitable bugs have been ironed out, the queues have died down and the iPhone is in plentiful supply.
Then do the sensible thing and buy a Blackberry.

Wow, I’m a little staggered that this post has caused more of a fuss than the Jesus post!

Well, when it first launched, it was given the nickname in the US press of ‘the Jesus Phone’…

So does that mean it’s bigger than the Beatles?

So come on guys… Should I cancel my iPhone order and try in an Apple store?

A guy I work with walked in to an o2 shop in Brum on Saturday and bought one. No queue, no activation problems nothing. I think your being paid by Apple / o2 to make it appear that there is more demand for the ‘Jesus phone v 2 point 0′ than there really is.

Honestly, I think this all comes down to a number of factors: incompetence, and yes, manufacturing a false demand. Was it silly to queue up at 5:30am in the morning? Certainly. But it was fun, met lots of people, and generally felt the excitement of the launch. Done it before, and will do it again!

I think I may make a return visit to an o2 store, and try again in the next week.

I’ve just read that the new iPhone support Exchange Server which has changed my opinion a little as it may actually be able to be classed as quite a useful tool for me.
Hmmm I may have to see how you people get on with it and then consider…
Bit crap that it hasn’t got MMS and the camera is still rubbish though.

Just wait until you can get what you want, not what your given. Your the customer remember.

What makes this worse for me is that I have two phones at the moment. One with a working screen and no ear-speaker and one with a broken screen, but the speaker working fine.

So I’m trying to fashion together a working phone by seeing whose calling me, picking up and not being able to hear them. Then having to tell them that I can’t hear, and could they call me back in 3 mins.

Then swapping the sim over to the broken screen phone, and hoping they call me back.

Arrggh!! Nightmare!

I hate to be a sheep but I really want one.

So should I buy Beth a wendy house for her birthday or get an iPhone. Decisions, decisions…

How about you buy me an iPhone and you can have the wendy house out of our Garden. Needs a lick of paint mind.
Then when I realise that the damn thing doesnt really suit my needs i’ll sell it you back for £50.
Everybody wins!

how about we just take all of the old bricked iPhones and build a Wendy house out of those?
