Berocca Blogger Relief

What does it take to get me to blog about your product? Well, a shed load of free goodies does grease the wheels somewhat! The nice people at Berocca sent me this “blogger relief pack” - which consists of a few toys (some of which are Windows only! Boo! Don’t they know that all the cool bloggers are using Mac?), a keyring, a pen holder, a glass, a “stress” ball (aka a standard bouncy ball) and a big tube of their product. It’s some kind of vitamin supplement that’s supposed to help you through your “stressful” day…

So, I really liked all the cool stuff you sent me - but I’m not sure I’ll be trying your product.. I’m not sure that 850% of my recommended daily allowance of Vitamin B2 is a good idea… Surly that’s why they’re called “recommended allowances”… But anyway, any other companies want me to spread the word? Be sure to include a pen - that’s always a winner with me!

There’s nothing wrong with selling out - I’ve done it.

Paul’s just jealous he doesn’t get free things to rant about.

Glad I didn’t disappoint ;-)

For the record, if I was to get free things to rant about, I may possibly write about them, but under the title ‘How Dare They!’.

But if I did, surely I would be playing straight into their hands. Regardless whether you say good or bad things about a product that has been forced upon you, writing about it achieves awareness, which I imagine is the end goal here.

I’m targeted by numerous advertisers that happen to be competing for the same keywords I happen to appear under also. Whilst I have spent time and effort in building a site that ranks well, companies who have not try to piggy-back on the back of all my hard work, and typically for some petty price or compensation.

Advertisers and other marketing companies seem to see ‘the blogosphere’ (for want of a better buzzword) as free advertising space, with writers who can be compensated with pointless freebies. They try to create ‘a conversation’ around certain products, but in an artificial and cynical manner, and I think this is to the detriment of the medium.

People should be able to read personal websites safe in the knowledge that posts are written in an unbiased (or with certain pre-known biases). It’s getting harder to do this, as more and more bloggers seem all to happy to sell themselves out — and not even to the highest bidder.

We all have our own morals, and stances on these things, but this is mine. Whilst I may write about products that I use and love, should you send me a freebie, or ask me to advertise your pointless (and usually worthless) product, you are likely to receive in return a polite put pointed decline.
